Agnes Virginia (Tyler) Hedges, age 99½ , left her earthly home Friday afternoon, January 27, 2017 at Glen Oaks Health Campus, New Castle, Indiana, where she had been a resident for the past seven years. Agnes was surrounded by much love and family as she passed from this world to her eternal home.
Agnes was born on June 7, 1917, in Henry County, Indiana, to James R. and Ida (Bales) Tyler. She graduated from Mt. Summit High School in 1935. On March 27, 1937, she married her high school sweetheart, John Albert Hedges. Agnes was a member of the Mt. Summit Christian Church, taught first grade Sunday School for over fifty years and served faithfully as a deaconess, loved all the special programs and music in her church.
Agnes was a Mother, Grandmother, and Great- Grandmother. She drove a school bus for the Mt. Summit Schools and worked in Blue River Valley School cafeteria. She and John farmed all their lives and raised turkeys for many years. For most of their lives, they lived on their farm on the Old Muncie Pike north of New Castle.
Left to cherish her memory are: her Children, John Larry “Johnny” (Lorraine) Hedges of Camp Wood, Texas, Virginia Kay “Ginny” Hedges (Tony) Riggs of rural New Castle, and Sandra Lee “Sandy” Hedges (Tim) Hird of Anderson, nine Grandchildren; Sharyn (Randy) Ray and Mark (Mary) Pierce of rural New Castle, Joe A. (Kari) Hedges of Bloomington, Indiana, John L. Hedges, Jr. of Mississippi, Kristin Stewart (Tony) Powell of Indianapolis, Benjamin (Armonda) Riggs of Des Moines, Iowa, Natalee Hird (Dustin) Baker of Lebanon, Indiana, Jordan A. Hird of Washington, D.C. and Tyler (Chelsea) Hird of Bloomington, Indiana, and fifteen Great Grandchildren; Annalise Ray (Bryce) Welsh, Connor (Lydia) Ray, Kendall Ray, Kindsey Pierce (Bryant) Boyer, Karlee Pierce, Kirstyn Pierce (Dylan) Hamm, Kathryn Pierce, Bobby Pierce, Karina, Bailey, Maia, Ethan and Tristan Powell, Brooklyn Baker and Adaline Hird.
Family members also surviving include: Sister, Delores Arvilla Tyler Crye of New Castle, Sister-in-law, Wanda Hedges of New Castle, Ruth Hedges Hale of Anderson and William Hedges of Florida.
Agnes was preceded in death by: her Husband, John Albert Hedges, who died in 1985, her Parents, James R. and Ida (Bales) Tyler, a Daughter, Martha Lou Hedges (Ralph) Pierce and Sister, Ethel Tyler Zimmerman, Robert Hedges, Barbara Hedges Holcomb, Dorothy Hedges Swoveland, Naomi Hedges Rutledge, Jane Hedges Turner and Harold Hedges.
Friends may call from 10:00 to 12:00 Noon Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Mt. Summit Christian Church, Prairie Road, Mt. Summit, Indiana. Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 Noon at the church with Dr. Lanny Lawler presiding over the services. Burial will follow at the Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Memorial contributions for Agnes Hedges may be given to Mt. Summit Christian Church in care of Memorials Fund.
