Obituary for Richard William Mackey

Richard William Mackey, age 87, New Castle resident, passed away Tuesday February 7, 2017 at his residence. He was born August 13, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of Leonard and Pauline Jones Mackey.

He is survived by: his Wife Phyllis Rode Mackey of New Castle and her Daughters; Julia, Kathy and Stacy, Sister, Dorothy Marie Mackey of Martinsville, former wife, Adalyn Ruth Taylor, Daughters; Renee Mackey, Michelle Lorraine Harvey, Gabrielle Marie Rhine.

He was Professor Emeritus at Ball State University from 1965 – 1996 and was a graduate of U.C.L.A., with a PhD in French History. Mr. Mackey taught French History at Ball State University for 31 years. Upon retirement, Dr. Mackey and wife Phyllis moved to New Castle, where he became president of the Henry County Retired Teachers Association, and President of the State of Indiana American Association of University Professors. Dr. Mackey has been a trustee and choir member and gave classes & lectures at First Presbyterian Church in New Castle, Indiana. He worked in the US. Army as an intelligence officer during the Korean Conflict where he was stationed in Paris and where he used his French and German language skills. Dr. Mackey loved to cook and was a voracious reader. He loved to travel in Europe and Canada. He played piano and sang in church choirs and was a bronze life-master in bridge. Richard Mackey had an interesting life well lived.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday February 18, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Wally Wilson officiating.
