Gerald K “Jerry” Hodson, age 86, longtime New Castle resident and local attorney, passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at his residence.
He was born December 8th, 1925 in Daleville, Indiana a son of the late Walter Eli and Mae E. Scott Hodson.
Jerry graduated from Middletown High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army for twenty-seven months during World War II, and was in a machine gun squad in Company D 341st Infantry 86th Infantry Division. His Division served under General Patton’s Third Army. His military unit was in France, Germany, and Austria during the war, and after the war he transferred to the Philippine Islands. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantrymen’s badge, and many other military medals.
He graduated from Indiana University in 1949 with a BS in business and with a Law Degree in 1951. Admitted to the Bar in December of 1951 and commenced practice with Scotten and Hinshaw law firm in New Castle, Indiana. He later formed a partnership with Thomas B. Millikan and later with Robert H. Harvey. Served for a number of years for the Character and Fitness Committee for the State Board of Law Examiners, and was a Charter Member to the Indiana Bar Foundation as well as being active in State and local Bar Association matters. He served as the Henry County Attorney, and Attorney for the Henry County Department of Public Welfare. He served ten years on the Indiana State Republican Committee, and served as a Congressional District Chairman from 1964 to 1974. He was as a delegate at the 1968 National Republican Convention in Miami, Florida. He also served as Henry County Republican Chairman. He was awarded the “Sagamore of the Wabash” award by Governor Edgar D. Whitcomb.
He was a member of many civic and social organizations including: the Masons, Shiners, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Elks, V.F.W., American Legion, Moose, and Eagles.
He enjoyed family activities, pets, nature, and working in his yard. He was a sports enthusiast, and was a strong supporter of Indiana University Basketball, and Football. He also enjoyed the Indianapolis Colts Football.
Left to cherish his loving memory include: his wife of 46 years, Helen Lacy Hodson, whom he married June 27, 1965; sister, Dorothy Wright of Middletown, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, and siblings, Robert S. Hodson, Kenneth Hodson, Jean Nixon, Lois Strohm, Bernadine Hodson, and Stephen Hodson.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Macer-Hall Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the funeral home with Reverend Jim Becker officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the time of service.
Military Honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion.
Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the funeral home.
